Confirmed: Sara Ali Khan to star opposite Varun Dhawan in Coolie No.1 adaptation

Sara Ali Khan has been finalized as Varun Dhawan’s heroine in the reworked version of the 1995 film Coolie No.1, which will be directed by his father, filmmaker David Dhawan, a leading daily reports. Farhad Samji, who has written the dialogues of the film, confirmed rumours of Sara starring opposite Varun in the film, adding that shooting will commence in July. Coolie No.1 starred Govinda and Karisma Kapoor in the lead roles and was directed by David Dhawan.

“It is a boon for any writer to work with a dedicated actor like Varun. I narrated the dialogue draft to him recently and he immediately asked me for a copy, so he could rehearse his lines even though there is still time for the film to go on the floors. I am looking forward to teaming up with Sara for the second time,” Farhad told the daily.

Reports of David Dhawan reviving his No.1 series with Coolie No.1 emerged last year while several quarters reported that Varun will star in it. After weeks of speculation, Varun confessed while speaking to leading international website BBC Asian Network earlier in March that he has signed up for the film.

“David ji had been looking for the perfect script for a while. We discussed many ideas even though Coolie No. 1 was always on our mind. We finally zeroed in on it because the lead character has a certain innocence even when he is conning others and that’s something today’s audience hasn’t seen in a while,” Farhad added.

Speaking of the film, Farhad added that the project is an adapted version of the 1995 film and not a remake or a sequel.  “We have written it keeping the sensibilities of today’s audience in mind. It will have plenty of humour and colour, larger-than life songs and will be mounted on a lavish scale. We are still contemplating locations, it could be shot on home ground or even set abroad,” he added.

Varun Dhawan is currently gearing up for the release of Kalank, scheduled for April 17 while Sara Ali Khan is filming Imtiaz Ali’s project opposite Kartik Aaryan.
