Mental Hai Kya: Watch out Rajkummar, Kangana won’t let you steal the show!

Going by the hints Kangana Ranaut is dropping about Mental Hai Kya, we are totally intrigued! The first look of the film was unveiled today and got us super excited! The film will see her reunited with her Queen co-star, the brilliant Rajkummar Rao.

The actress shared that the film is not a crazy comedy but instead something that’s hard to define. “You’re never sure if this girl is hallucinating or what’s happening to her is for real, whether the guy (Rajkummar Rao) is trying to trap her or she’s got him wrong,” she revealed.

Kangana further dwelled on the concept of an alternate reality, sharing an anecdote about seeing a man daily on the streets on her way to school. She added that while everyone said he was mad, she herself wondered if they should be the ones pitying him or whether he was pitying them instead! “I’d have liked to study psychology had I continued with my education and over the years, have read a lot of books on the mind to satisfy this craving,” Kangana maintained.

The actress was honest enough to admit in hindsight that she had played actress Sana Azim, based on the late Parveen Babi in Mohit Suri’s 2006 film Woh Lamhe, a tad too early in her career. “Mahesh Bhatt who scripted the film asked me if I understood her illness and I told him I did, but I didn’t really understand then what schizophrenia was and played the character like she was insane,” she candidly accepted.

As for Rajkummar, she had some interesting trivia to share about his casting in Queen. Apparently, director Vikas Bahl had shown her photographs of Rao and a top model, leaving it to her to decide who would better suit the role of the fiancé who leaves her stranded before the pheras.

Eventually, both she and Bahl decided that Raj was the better choice by far. “I was at the top of my game then but he was not intimidated and treated me on camera with the disdain his character demanded,” she remembers. In fact, she goes on to point out that Rajkummar is a star today while still being a brilliant actor, and she will have to be on her toes to ensure he doesn’t steal the show from right under her nose!

…And that attitude is just one of the many reasons we so love Ms Ranaut!
