Shackled and Spooky: The new Pari promo ft. Anushka intrigues again!

“She will grow on you... #1MonthToPari,” wrote Anushka Sharma, sharing the ‘Pari Screamer 2’. And expectedly, it has got us intrigued all over again… The scene looks harmless enough. A pretty Anushka is lounging relaxed on her bed, leaning against her bedpost, watching a cartoon show on TV. And then the camera pans to her hands – they are hand-cuffed, and her legs – one is shackled to the bed, the other bears a deep indentation caused by the metal cuff. And even as we watch, her toenails start to grow, growing long and jagged within moments…

Pari is stirring up the interest alright. The film poster released recently gave us a haunting look of the actress, with a malevolent force standing behind her. It was not a pretty sight. A menacing smile danced on the woman’s face, as she stood swathed in black, long green-tinged fingers resting possessively on Anushka’s shoulders. Surprisingly, Anushka’s expression showed no fear: instead she threw a strong, challenging look from her light eyes.

The poster had come on the heels of the film’s teaser, which Anushka had released with a cheeky, “Sweet dreams guys…” The 18-second clip started off with Anushka’s cold stare and scarred face. Then, bruises and blood streaks inexplicably began to manifest on her visage, leaving it lacerated and gruesome. She continued to stoically stare straight ahead, out of eyes that had become bloodshot and gory…

While the early buzz suggested that the film was a supernatural horror, there is growing certainty that film actually portrays Anushka’s character as a victim of abuse. “Pari, not a fairytale,” reads the tagline of the film, in which she allegedly plays a witch. By all accounts, it’s a chilling watch in store!

Pari is Anushka’s third production by Clean Slate Films which is owned by her and brother, Karnesh Sharma. Her earlier productions have also presented strong female characters set against issues that plague Indian society. While NH10 had tackled honour killings, Phillauri turned the attention to superstitions. Pari looks set to target another shocking reality and make a hard impact.
