Sonam Kapoor on first periods and flower pot roles!

We can’t help but marvel at Sonam Kapoor. On the one hand, a fashionista who is followed obsessively for her style choices. And on the other, an artiste who is maturing fast and is never afraid to speak her mind. On the verge of the release of her PadMan, based on the inventor of low-cost sanitary napkins, Arunachalam Muruganantham, she is a delight to listen to as she opens up about a range of issues…

Speaking about being comfortable with your personality, she says, “I honestly don’t give a s**t about my image! I just believe in doing the right thing and the correct films. Which is why what people think of me is their problem, not mine.”

On being offered roles of substance now, she quipped, “People don’t come to me with neurotic roles anymore. Nobody expects me to do a flower pot role. And I love that because I don’t want to waste my time listening to something that’s irrelevant and I wouldn’t do.”

Accepting that the scenario in the Hindi film industry is improving, she can’t help wishing the changes would set in sooner. “I wish it was faster and more relevant so that I am around to see the complete change. But I think we are at least a 100 years behind Hollywood.”

Addressing the issue of the industry not being ready to invest in an all-female cast film, she maintained, “I don’t know if they will give us as much because you cannot ignore the fact that there’s still a massive pay disparity, which is insane. It’s important to get what you are worth. Otherwise, there needs to be a staunch stand for what you believe in. And women need to step up for sure.”

Sonam even opened up about her first period, sharing, “I was 15 when I got my periods and all my friends had got that way before me. I was very upset that I had not got it. So when I actually got it I was very relieved because I kept telling my parents there is something wrong with me as I did not get my periods. So, I was very, very happy.’’
