The Coronavirus pandemic last year created havoc throughout the world. It brought the world to a standstill, so much so, that the Cannes Film Festival was canceled and replaced by a low-key event in October showcasing short films but without the A-list movie stars, directors and producers.
However, this year the organizers are intent on hosting an in-person festival with a slight delay in the schedule. The 74th Cannes Film Festival will take place from July 6-17, which is about two months after its typical summer period. The festival was earlier scheduled to take place from May 11 to 22.
74th FESTIVAL DE CANNES: CHANGE OF DATES
Initially scheduled from 11 to 22 May 2021, the Festival de Cannes will now take place from Tuesday 6 to Saturday 17 July 2021. #Cannes2021— Festival de Cannes (@Festival_Cannes) January 27, 2021
Festival de Cannes shared the new date son their official Twitter account. They tweeted, “74th FESTIVAL DE CANNES: CHANGE OF DATES. Initially scheduled from 11 to 22 May 2021, the Festival de Cannes will now take place from Tuesday 6 to Saturday 17 July 2021. #Cannes2021 (sic).”
Given the high rate of infection in France and talk of another lockdown looming, the postponement was inevitable. Hollywood superstars usually flock to the venue for the two-week extravaganza strutting their stuff on the red carpet. The Cannes Film Festival has run for seven decades smoothly and without a glitch.
