‘It was less vitriolic than I was expecting, it’s more fun when you’re an underdog’, says Robert Pattinson on receiving backlash for becoming the next Batman

Superheroes may come and superheroes may go but one fictional character will forever be etched in the audiences’ memories as the most popular and well-loved character of them all and that is none-other-than Batman. Now, the cape crusader has once again got a new star to portray him on screen and it’s Robert Pattinson. However, when news broke out that Pattinson is playing the next Batman not many very happy. There were some who thought that he can pull off the role like Christian Bale did in the Christopher Nolan trilogy but there was quite a lot of backlash where people asked Warner Bros. to reconsider their decision.

However, the brickbats have not deterred Pattinson who feels it’s all for the good as people have fewer expectations of him and was rather “less vitriolic” than he expected. In an interview with a leading international website, Pattinson said, “To be honest, it was less vitriolic than I was expecting. It’s much more fun when you’re an underdog. There’s no expectation of you.” Apparently, Pattinson’s love for Batman goes back to his childhood as he was the only comic book character he always loved. He said, “When I was a kid, it was the only outfit that I had. It’s actually an interesting part. I think it’s because he doesn’t have any superpowers.”

Pattinson also spoke about how he convinced Matt Reeves to cast him in his Batman directorial. He said, “I’d had Batman in my mind for a while. It’s such an absurd thing to say. I sort of had an idea to do it, and I’d been prodding Matt. He didn’t accept any prods. I kept asking to meet him.” Pattinson calls putting on the Batsuit as the “craziest thing” he has ever done in terms of film stuff. Talking about the transition, he said in the interview, “I put it on. I remember saying to Matt, ‘It does feel quite transformative!’ He was like, ‘I would hope it does! You’re literally in the Batsuit.’ You do feel very powerful immediately. And it’s pretty astonishing, something that is incredibly difficult to get into, so the ritual of getting into it is pretty humiliating. You’ve got five people trying to shove you into something. Once you’ve got it on, it’s like, ‘Yeah, I feel strong, I feel tough, even though I had to have someone squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs.’”

Reeves’ Batman is a younger version of the cape crusader and Pattinson had a clear take on how he would like to play the superhero. He said, “You’re trying to think of the way to balance, how to bring something new to it and not want to scare people off. And work in the confines of the costume. I was talking (to Christopher Nolan) about things to do with the Batsuit. How to get more movements in it.”
