Watch: The first trailer of Star Wars Episode IX titled ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ has a hero in Rey

The first look at Star Wars: Episode IX titled The Rise of Skywalker has finally been unveiled. The title was revealed at a Star Wars celebration event in Chicago while the teaser trailer was shared on social media. Director JJ Adams and Lucas film president Kathleen Kennedy made the announcement on Friday. Adams also revealed that the film is set some time after the previous instalment The Last Jedi.

The trailer opens with Rey panting in the desert and awaiting some sort of an attack. Mark Hamill’s voice tells her, “We’ve passed on all we know. A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight.” The camera moves to her hand and we get to see her whipping out a lightsaber, one that appears to be Luke’s.

In the two-minute trailer, we also get to see a brief glimpse of Princess Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher. The unseen footage is a shot of what appears to be her hands holding a Medal of Bravery, which she previously awarded to Luke and Han Solo in Star Wars: A New Hope. Kylo Ren, Lando, Chewbacca, Finn, Poe and C3PO also make their appearance in the trailer. The only new character that we get to see in the trailer is of D-O, a happy droid who’s shown wheeling next to BB-8.

The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, Keri Russell, Richard E Grant and newcomer Naomi Ackie. The film will wrap the Skywalker family saga that was started more than 40 years after George Lucas’ original Star Wars released. The Rise of Skywalker is the third episode of the third set of Star Wars films. Lucas started the franchise in 1977. The film is due to be released on December 20.
