Rihanna calls out Snapchat for shaming DV victims, Snap’s market value drops in a day

On Tuesday, popular photo-sharing app Snapchat ran an advertisement for a game called ‘Would You Rather’. The ad featured famous pop singer Rihanna and Chris Brown, who were dating once but called their relationship off later. The two options on the ad were ‘Slap Rihanna or Punch Chris’.

Following the tragic phase and her involvement in the physically abusive relationship – Rihanna decided to address the issue personally and posted a story on Snapchat’s rival platform – Instagram!
She wrote: “Now Snapchat I know you already know you ain't my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess! I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb! You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it!!! This isn’t much about my personal feeling, cause I don’t have much of them… but all the women, children and men that have been victims of DV in the past especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet… you let us down! Shame on you. Throw your whole app-ology away. ”

In 2009, the singer was violently assaulted by her then-boyfriend Chris Brown, who bit, choked, punched and even threatened to kill her. The conditions had been so bad that the singer had landed in the hospital. Many fans were quick to pick up the hints that Rihanna dropped on her story and showed their support by deleting the app.

Soon after that, the pop star’s story was posted, Snapchat’s investors and shareholders took their steps back, causing a 4% drop in its market value. This move translated into erasing almost $800 million of the company’s value. A further 1% drop has been observed today, so far.

In an official statement to a leading news agency, Snapchat officials said, “This advertisement is disgusting and never should have appeared on our service. We are so sorry we made the terrible mistake of allowing it through our review process. We are investigating how that happened so that we can make sure it never happens again”.

However, this isn’t the first time Snapchat has been called out by international celebrities. Earlier, Kylie Jenner tweeted talking about the Snapchat update. That too had cost them a 7% drop in their stocks.

After the app rolled out its new user-interface, a petition on Change.Org was signed over 1.2 million times to get the original UI back.

Snapchat, its high time to SNAP out of your bubble and get your cat right, say what!?
