The 2002 romantic drama, Devdas, which had Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit in the lead roles, completes 16 years today. The iconic film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, was based on the 1917 Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, titled Devdas. This was not the first screen adaptation of the cult novel but the third rendition.

The film was about Devdas Mukherjee (Shah Rukh) and his ill-fated love story with Paro (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) with whom his family forbids him to marry. This makes him take refuge in alcohol and seek solace with a courtesan, Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit). Jackie Shroff played the pivotal role of Chunnilal in the film. Bhansali’s version had opulent sets, breathtaking costumes and razor-sharp dialogues which have gained a cult status in popular culture. Here’s taking a look at some of these dialogues which are often repeated even today.
