After yawning on the Cannes red carpet – she has had a gruelling schedule – Kristen Stewart topped it up with a strong statement. She broke the Cannes strict dress code, when she slipped off her Louboutin heels and walked barefoot on the red carpet at the BlacKkKlansman premiere. While her feet might have been killing her, her act is seen more as a purposeful flouting of the film festival red carpet’s high heels only policy. Do note, she had worn her heels for part of the red carpet and had also been photographed in them.

After taking off her shoes which she carried in her hands, she went on climb the stairs in bare feet.

Now that is a rarity at Cannes. The festival’s controversial dress code has caused many to speak out against it, after a group of women wearing flat shoes were reportedly turned away from a screening of Carol in 2015. The festival committee had later confirmed that “it is obligatory for all women to wear high heels to red-carpet screenings.”

Kristen had deliberately made her point a year later when she paired black trainers with her silver gown, before putting her heels on in time for photographs. She had gone on to make her feelings known by showing her middle finger to the cameras after changing into the required shoes. “Things have to change immediately,” she had said at the time. “It has become really obvious that if (a man and I) were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, ‘Excuse me, young lady, you’re not wearing heels. You cannot come in.’ Then (I’m going to say), ‘Neither is my friend. Does he have to wear heels?’ It can work both ways,” she had pointed out.

Kristen, who is accompanied to the festival by her girlfriend model Stella Maxwell, is part of the first female-dominated Cannes Film Festival jury in many decades, comprising Lupita Nyong’o, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz and Fan Bingbing among others.
