'It’s a huge compliment for me if people disliked Kabir Singh,' says Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor's and Kiara Advani's Kabir Singh did not just break all records at the box office but also became a subject of severe criticism and hatred. Kabir Singh, the character played by Shahid was indeed so dark and disturbing that the audience eventually began hating him more than the film itself. While other actors would have refrained from doing such a negative and bold role, it was Shahid who pulled it off with great conviction and perfection. Speaking about the character and the hate it received, the actor, during an interview with a leading daily, told it was a huge compliment for him. He added that it is a big thing for an actor to make his audience believe the character exists in reality.

"For a star who is otherwise liked and loved, it’s a big thing if people watch a character on screen and wonder what the hell he is doing. It’s a huge compliment for me if people disliked Kabir Singh. To be able to lead people into a willing suspension of belief is the biggest victory for a film," Shahid told.

Speaking about his yet another intense and dark character - Tommy Singh from Udta Punjab, Shahid added that people should exit the theatres loving the performance and not the character. "My drug addict character of Tommy Singh in Udta Punjab was also quite deplorable. I feel that people should walk out of the hall loving a performance, not the character. One needs to, therefore, make bold choices," Shahid said.

The actor went on to say it won't be possible for him to become like Kabir Singh in reality. "In real life, I could never be like Kabir Singh in any possible way. The challenge therefore was to find those grey strands in the personality, take a magnifying glass to enlarge them and bring them to life on screen. Those elements were also in the original Telugu film, Arjun Reddy, and that’s why I insisted that the same director be retained for the Hindi remake," Shahid quoted.

Kabir Singh, a Hindi remake of Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Telugu blockbuster Arjun Reddy which starred Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey in lead roles, released on June 21. The film features Kiara Advani as the lead actress and plays the role of Preeti.
