KJo's hopes to host Oscars face a roadblock; Academy Awards shelves ‘popular film’ category after flak

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that hand out the popular and prestigious Oscar awards said on Thursday that it was shelving plans for a “popular film” Oscar award that had received a lot of criticism and flak from critics. The critics had alleged that it was a desperate attempt to boost viewership of the award ceremony and honour money-spinning films.

Unlike, Indian awards which usually caters to the moneymaking films and awards them, so much so that there are two different categories at the Filmfare Award – Best Actor/Actress Award and Best Actor/Actress Critic’s Choice Award. Usually, the latter is a more powerful performance but the film or the actor might not be the popular one and hence has to acquiesce with this.

Dawn Hudson, the CEO of the Academy said in a statement, “There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members. We have made changes to the Oscars over the years - including this year - and we will continue to evolve while also respecting the incredible legacy of the last 90 years.”

The organization that hands out the Oscars had announced a set of changes to the 91st Oscars and also announced the new award that will be held in Hollywood on February 24, 2019. The changes included shortening the ceremony to three hours, an earlier airdate for February 9, 2020, several weeks earlier and a new category for honouring popular films that usually never gets nominated at the Oscars but rakes in the most amount of moolah. Superhero films, franchises like Star Wars and such would fall under this category. However, the category has been shelved after an outrage.

At the time of the announcement a popular columnist had quipped, “Getting Manish Paul to host too?" Ace filmmaker Karan Johar who is a fixture at all the film awards in India was quick to reply that he hopes he gets to host the Oscars.
