Virginie Viard's new collection for Chanel AW 2019 brings back Coco's codes of glamour on the Grand Palais runway

They're back in all their glory! Chanel hosted a show at the Grand Palais in Paris, for their 2019-20 collection. Creating a cinematic experience with their shows and collections at the runway has always been Chanel's specialty and this time was no different!

Virginie Viard, the Creative Director of the house, paired up with film-maker Sofia Coppola to create a Coco Chanel-inspired 80's paradise on the runway, just like the collection she showcased.

The doors of the Grand Palais were lined with Christmas trees decorated with white camellias, leading via lacquered coromandel-style screens to Coco’s recreated apartment, atelier and staircase reimagined on a Hollywood scale.

The collection was flecked with references to Mademoiselle’s private apartments. The Bold monochromes were replaced with some hearty hues, tweed coats and silken add-ons were enhanced with lace, embroidery and feathers, amongst other things.

Viard took the label back to their roots with Coco's vision of style and needless to say, the experience and collection was half reality and half magic!

"There is a sort of simplicity in going back to Chanel’s ABC. We don’t need to do too much,” the designer said. “I always question the context, which has nothing to do with the way we lived decades ago. What would a woman like today? How would she wear it?”
