Exclusive: Barun Sobti on taking a grey role in ‘Asur’ opposite Arshad Warsi - "Loved how the show explored the psychology of killers"

Barun Sobti has an avid and loyal fan following. The actor has managed to impress with every role he plays be it his serials, films or web shows. Currently, he is riding high on the success of his web show Asur that is bringing him rave reviews. Playing the role of forensic expert Nikhil Nair, Barun for the first time has taken on a grey character in his repertoire. In an exclusive chat with PeepingMoon.com, He opened up about how he prepared for the character and his experience of working with an established actor like Arshad Warsi.

Talking about his character from Asur and how difficult it was to enact such a complex role, Barun said, “It does take a lot of investment. I loved the character when I heard the script. There was a lot of investment on how to chart out my character and it took us some time to get in the groove and it did take a toll on me. However, I think I got lucky to get the opportunity.

When asked about how he prepared to play a forensic expert in the series, Barun said, “I read a lot of non-fiction and watched a lot of documentaries. When I read the script of Asur and when Sandeep called me and narrated the script, it had all the reasons in place why everything was happening. If you read all the literature in our country about killings we never get to know why the killing is happening and what the motive of the killer is. A lot of times the killers are the victims of society and why a man becomes a killer is the crux of solving a crime. When Sandeep called me I was very surprised as it was only his imagination that put me in the character and I am very thankful that he did.”

Barun also spoke highly of Arshad with whom he shares screen space in Asur and said, “He is a fabulous actor. We did not even speak before we started shooting. We went for a couple of readings and that's it. The whole cast was so phenomenal. Everyone did their job really really well.”

Since Asur has a lot of mythological aspects attached to it, we asked Barun whether he received any backlash about it and whether he was skeptical of taking on the role because of it. To this, he said, “No, we weren’t thinking like that. The whole team was so focused and the script was so perfect that there was no dilemma. Everyone felt elated and under pressure to actually be a part of the series. Mythology is always up for debate as it is based on belief.”
