Exclusive: My ‘Mardaani’ cop won’t fit in Rohit Shetty’s cop universe: Rani Mukerji

The question PeepingMoon.com put before that husky, gorgeous actress Rani Mukerji was how would she react if Bollywood’s action filmmaker Rohit Shetty invited her gutsy and tough Mardaani franchise cop character Shivani Shivaji Roy to make a special appearance in one of his future cop universe films? The sequel to YRF’s Mardaani of 2014 with Rani in the lead releases this Friday.

Rohit, in Ranveer Singh’s Simmba last December, had Ajay (Singham) Devgn making a heroic entry at the climax to the delight of audiences and fans of the actor and character. And at the end of Simmba, the director fleetingly introduced his next cop universe character – Akshay Kumar as Veer Sooryavanshi. In Sooryavanshi, which releases in March 2020, Rohit gets Singham and Simmba to join forces with Sooryavanshi in the battle against terrorism. The filmmaker is fascinated with this genre of cinema and with cop characters in particular.

Talking exclusively to PeepingMoon.com, Rani said, “My cop character Shivani from Mardaani is different from Ajay’s Singham, Ranveer’s Simmba, Akshay’s Sooryavanshi and even Salman Khan’s Chulbul Pandey because I’m a woman. I don’t know if Shivani Shivaji Roy has place in Rohit’s cop universe. Mardaani as a franchise talks about real life cops and is a realistic take on how crimes are handled in our country. Rohit’s cop universe has larger than life cops. My character is probably more grounded.”
