CONFIRMED: Deepika Padukone to play Romi Dev in ’83 and get co-producer’s credit too!

The mystery about who will play Romi Dev in Kabir Khan’s historic sports biopic ’83 has finally been cleared. The film, under production in England, is based on the Indian cricket team’s World Cup victory in June 1983 at Lord’s against the West Indies. It stars Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev who famously captained the victorious team that brought India its first cricketing glory.

Now PeepingMoon.com has confirmed information that playing Ranveer’s wife in ’83 will be the mercurial actor’s gorgeous real wife and actress Deepika Padukone. She was offered the role of Romi Dev months ago but Deepika, who is busy with Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak in which she plays acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, took her time arriving at a decision.

There’s more. Apparently Kabir, who’s co-producing ’83 with Madhu Mantena, Sajid Nadiadwala, Reliance Entertainment and Vishnu Induri of Celebrity Cricket League, has also offered Deepika co-producer’s credit in the title of the film. And so, the actress’ production company KA Entertainment will find itself in the titles of two films in 2020 – Chhapaak and ’83. And fans of Ranveer and Deepika who have been anxious to see them on screen together again, will get their wish too.

Deepika will have a delightful role to play in ’83. More than just a cameo. The story goes that the real Romi was sitting in the stands at Lord’s for the World Cup final in June 1983. Every time the West Indies hit a boundary, their fans in the stands would celebrate, and unable to bear this an upset Romi left the stadium and gave away her pass. “I thought I’d go to my hotel room and cry,” she later said.

But later, when India began picking up wickets, a hopeful Romi tried to re-enter Lord’s and was turned away at the gates as she did not have a pass. So she went back to her hotel room and watched the rest of the final on TV. Poor Kapil Dev discovered much later that his wife was not in the stadium when he lifted the World Cup triumphantly. Kabir is bound to use this drama to great effect in ’83 and Deepika will be anxious to slip into Romi’s role.
