Kartik Aaryan’s offensive dialogue on marital rape to be edited out from ‘Pati, Patni Aur Woh’

Kartik Aaryan, Bhumi Pednekar and Ananya Panday starrer Pati Patni Aur Woh’s trailer was released recently. It is the remake of the 1978 film starring Sanjeev Kumar, Vidya Sinha and Ranjeeta Kaur in the lead roles and is one of the most anticipated films. However, a dialogue in its trailer has rubbed people the wrong way and has offended many as it cracks a joke on marital rape. An entertainment portal reported that the makers ‘got carried away’ when they decided to include a joke in the film on this controversial issue. Apparently, the said scene will be edited out of the film.

The website reported a source who said, “Since Kartik Aaryan’s monologue in Pyaar Ka Punchnaama was a hit they thought of doing another one this time and got carried away. The offensive monologue will be edited out of the film.” The film and Kartik have faced a lot of backlash and criticism on social media for trivializing such a grave issue which is still a bone of contention in the country since it is not made a punishable offense.

In the scene, Kartik’s character of Chintu Tyagi tells his friend played by Aparshakti Khurana that how men are likened to rapists if they coax their wives for sex. He says, “Biwi se sex maang lein toh hum bikhaari. Biwi ko sex na de toh hum atyachaari. Aur kisi tarah jugaad laga ke usse sex haasil kar lena toh balaatkari bhi hum hai. (If we ask our wives for sex then we’re called beggars, if we deny them sex then we’re called torturers, and if we coerce them into having sex with us, we’re called rapists).”

Several Twitter users expressed their disbelief on the use of marital rape as a joke in the film and called the dialogue sexist, insensitive and crass. Pati, Patni Aur Woh is directed by Mudassar Aziz and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Renu Ravi Chopra, and Krishan Kumar. It is slated to release on December 6.
