‘When Akshay Kumar or Salman Khan does a film, no one calls it a male-centric film’, says Sonakshi Sinha on the disparity

In her nine-year-long-career, Sonakshi Sinha has managed to do diverse roles. She has deftly been able to scuttle between masala potboilers like Dabangg and Rowdy Rathore to Lootera, Noor and Akira. The actress might not be very successful at the box office but there has been no dearth of scripts for her. In a recent interview, the actress opened up about actresses finally getting their due and the grouse that a film when its heroine-driven gets labeled as ‘female-centric’.

Talking about the grudge that she bears when a heroine-driven film is labeled female-centric, Sonakshi said, “I just want this whole thing of calling a film led by a female artiste ‘woman-centric’ to go away because when an Akshay (Kumar) or a Salman (Khan) does a film, no one calls it a male-centric film. A film is a film. Period. We should stop categorizing them. We should treat them as equals.”

Speaking further about the disparity, Sonakshi said that male stars reject films that have bigger female parts. She came to know about this when informed during the interview that her Mission Mangal co-star Taapsee Pannu had said that it was difficult to get male stars for films with stronger female characters. To this Sonakshi said, “It’s true. This is a mindset that should change because I think it would be really nice to have men supporting women for a change. I would also like to see that in Hindi films. Now, why that happens you should ask the men.”

Sonakshi will be next seen in the comedy Khandaani Shafakhana which is slated to release on August 2. She also has Mission Mangal in the pipeline which is scheduled to release on August 15.
