Don't want to give publicity to fools: Madhu Chopra on article addressing daughter Priyanka as ‘scam artist’

Madhu Chopra isn’t really disturbed by the article that referred to her daughter Priyanka Chopra as a ‘global scam artist’, and asked about it during an interview with a leading daily, said she isn’t interested in “giving publicity to fools”. The article, published in TheCut article – an offshoot of The New York Mag, has been retracted after it was censured online by celebrities and social media.

"It is a happy phase for our family, and we don't want to be disturbed by such idiotic things. I am happy that my daughter is married to someone she truly loves," Madhu Chopra told the daily. Journalist Mariah Smith, who authored the article in question, said in it that the 36-year-old actress had tricked American singer Nick Jonas, 26, into a lifelong commitment when all he really wanted was a fling.

Madhu Chopra, however, is pretty much unfazed and dismissed the author and the publishing house as ‘fools’. "I don't want to give publicity to those fools. There are some donkeys who do anything they feel like, but their actions don't affect us,” she added.

The article was circulated on social media while the author, as well as the publication, was condemned by several members of the film industry including Arjun Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. The particular part of the article that has upset a large section of social media, reads, “Priyanka: She is a modern-day scam artist, in my opinion. That’s right: Nicholas Jonas married into a fraudulent relationship against his will this past Saturday, December the 1st, and I’ll tell you why I think so…” while the headline screams, “Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s Love for Real?”

Priyanka, meanwhile, also responded to the article and dismissed it as a “random thing”. Asked about the article during an event in New Delhi on Wednesday, Priyanka told an eminent journalist, “I don’t even want to react or comment. It’s not even in my stratosphere. I’m in a happy place at this moment. These kinds of random things can’t disturb it.”

Nick and Priyanka married in a two-part wedding ceremony at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur – on December 1 in a Christian wedding and as per Hindu traditions on December 2.  The couple hosted a reception at The Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi on December 4 in honour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi while the event was held in the presence of close friends and family.

Reports suggest that Priyanka and Nick will host a reception for her friends and colleagues from the film fraternity in Mumbai in due course of time but no official date has been announced by the couple.
