Hum Aapke Hain Koun celebrates 24 years: Reasons why the Salman-Madhuri film became iconic

The cult and iconic film Hum Aapke Hain Koun! celebrated 24 years yesterday and Madhuri Dixit-Nene who played the female lead in the film took to social media to share a heartfelt message for her director Sooraj Barjatya and co-star Salman Khan. The film became a stupendous hit at the time of its release and established many box office records. It was the first Hindi film to gross over Rs 1 billion, and when adjusted for inflation, is the highest grossing Hindi film of the 90s and also still one of the highest-earning Bollywood films ever. Hum Aapke Hain Koun was the remake of Rajshri Productions previous hit Nadiya Ke Paar that starred Sachin Pilgaonkar and Sadhana Singh.

The film celebrated the Indian wedding traditions and kind of became the pioneer in the big, fat family wedding genre in Bollywood. HAHK, made during the 90s, harped on college life and the rebellious hero and heroine who would strive to be together even when the families disagreed on the alliance. However, Hum Aapke Hain Koun! brought the sacrifice of Madhuri and Salman's characters to the forefront but also showcased how a family gives them their blessings when they find out that the lead actors are in love with each other.

Madhuri and Salman became the heartthrobs of the nation after the film’s release and everyone wanted a bubbly and effervescent daughter like Madhuri while Salman became every mother and mother-in-law’s favourite son. Renuka Shahane who debuted with the film became the ideal sister-in-law and daughter-in-law much before Smriti Irani came on television screens. Mohnish Bahl who had till then done mostly done negative roles in films was shown in a positive light and his performance as the elder brother was much acclaimed by critics and loved by the audience. After Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor’s brotherly acts in numerous films, Mohnish and Salman’s pairing was loved by the audience.

The film had an ensemble cast comprising of Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo, Anupam Kher, Ajit Vachchani, Bindu, Dilip Joshi, Satish Shah, Himani Shivpuri and Laxmikant Berde. HAHK gave ample screen space and character development to all of them making it an entertaining film. Salman and Madhuri's crackling chemistry was another factor for the film's fabulous success. Now, that there are several reunions taking place we hope Salman and Madhuri once again pair-up with each other and light up the screen with their chemistry.

The film also became a hit because of its chart-topping songs and costumes. Didi Tera Devar Deewana held the No.1 position for several weeks and established another record for being the most popular song ever. Madhuri and Salman’s costumes in the film gained somewhat iconic status and every other wedding had people sporting Madhuri’s sarees and lehengas while Salman’s coat from the film and his suspenders look was also a hit with the men. Women asked for the purple saree and the green and white lehenga worn by Madhuri in the film for their wedding trousseau. Hum Aapke Hain Koun was the biggest hits of its time and even today is eagerly watched when it airs on television channels.
