Box Office Day 3: Akshay Kumar's and Vidya Balan's Mission Mangal crosses Rs 70 crore; John Abraham's Batla House show substantial growth

Akshay Kumar's and John Abraham's Independence Day war at the box-office has begun. Bollywood's poster boys of nationalism, Akshay and John, have released Mission Mangal and Batla House respectively on August 15 this year. Mission Mangal, which is based on Indian Space Research Organisation's successful mission to Mars, co-stars Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, Vidya Balan and Kirti Kulhari. On day 3 at the box-office, the film has taken a lead after raking in Rs 70.02 crore. 

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on Sunday that Mission Mangal witnessed a superb growth on Day 3. "Thursday Rs 29.16 cr, Friday Rs 17.28 cr, Saturday Rs 23.58 cr. Total: Rs 70.02 cr. India biz," Adarsh added.

Batla House, on the other hand, minted Rs 35.29 crore. Directed by Nikkhil Advani, the film s about the alleged police encounter that took place in Delhi in the wake of the serial blasts of 2008. Adarsh tweeted that Batla House showed a substantial growth on Day 3. "Should witness solid growth today Sunday. Thursday Rs 15.55 cr, Friday Rs 8.84 cr, Saturday Rs 10.90 cr. Total: Rs 35.29 cr. India biz," Adarsh tweeted.

While the Akshay Kumar-starrer opened in over 3,000 screens nationwide, John's Batla House released across 2750 screens.

This is not the first time that Akshay and John have vied for Independence Day honours at the box-office. Last year, Akshay's Gold and John's Satyamev Jayate released on the same day, to cash in on the Independence Day weekend. Before the release of their respective films, the actors met each other and did a special photoshoot together.
